Understanding the Various Causes and Treatments for Chronic Back Pain
SHARE

Back pain affects many adults, and it can disrupt work, sleep, and daily movement. Some cases fade after rest, but chronic back pain lasts for months. Since the spine contains joints, discs, nerves, and muscles, pain may start in several places. You may have ongoing symptoms, but a clear medical review helps narrow the cause. Here are the causes and treatments for chronic back pain:

Causes of Back Pain

Sciatica typically starts when a nerve root in the lower spine gets pressed, and pain may travel down the leg. This pattern feels like sharp or burning back pain. Because the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and legs, symptoms often spread beyond one spot. Numbness and tingling may appear, too.

Osteoarthritis wears down joint cartilage over time, and the small spinal joints may grow stiff and sore. Age raises the risk. When joint surfaces lose their smooth lining, movement may trigger pain and swelling. Some people also develop bone spurs that narrow nearby spaces.

A herniated disc develops when inner disc material pushes outward, but symptoms vary by location. Degenerative disc disease involves disc wear with age. As discs lose height and moisture, the spine absorbs force less well, and nearby nerves may become irritated. Spinal stenosis narrows the spinal canal, and walking often brings leg pain or heaviness.

Treatments for Pain

Doctors use several injections to target pain sources, and each option serves a different purpose. Standard examples include:

  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Facet joint injections
  • Sacroiliac joint injections

Because these treatments place medicine near the inflamed tissue, they may reduce swelling and pain for a period. Some injections also help confirm where the pain starts.

Nerve blocks interrupt pain signals, and they often help when doctors suspect a specific nerve pathway. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat on selected nerves. If a block brings short-term relief, radiofrequency treatment may offer longer symptom control because it disrupts nerve signaling. These methods often fit patients with joint-based spine pain.

Spinal cord stimulation sends mild electrical signals to the spinal cord, but it usually follows other treatments. A small device is placed under the skin. When pain has lasted despite therapy, medicines, or injections, stimulation may reduce how strongly the brain reads pain signals.

Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

Doctors start with symptom history, and they ask where the pain begins, how long it lasts, and what makes it worse. A physical exam follows. Since leg weakness, numbness, fever, or bladder changes may point to urgent problems, your clinician looks for warning signs early. Imaging or nerve tests may help when the exam suggests a structural issue.

A treatment plan depends on the cause, and it often combines more than one approach. You may need medication, guided procedures, physical therapy, or a surgery review. When doctors match treatment to exam findings and imaging, care becomes more precise. Clear follow-up visits also help track pain patterns and response.

Some centers also offer minimally invasive techniques, including:

  • Endoscopic discectomy
  • Minimally invasive decompression

Get Treated for Back Pain

Chronic back pain has many causes, and lasting relief starts with an accurate diagnosis. Delaying care may limit more of your routine. When you understand the source of pain, you and your doctor can choose a focused plan. If back pain keeps returning or interferes with daily life, schedule a medical evaluation and discuss your treatment options.
